Small Area Estimates from the American Community Survey Using a Housing Unit Model
نویسنده
چکیده
The American Community Survey (ACS) is designed to, ultimately, provide census long-form information on a continuous basis. Although the aim of providing current socio-economic data on the population can be realized, a yearly sample size equal to the traditional census long-form sample size would be prohibitively expensive. The aim of this work is to produce a small area estimation method that accounts for the sample design and does not assume that the within tract variance is estimated without error. In future work, this model can be easily extended to incorporate more covariates, at any of the levels, or to include data collected at previous times.

RESEARCH REPORT SERIES (Statistics #2003-08) Small Area Estimation from the American Community Survey using a Hierarchical Logistic Model of Persons and Housing Units
A multivariate binomial/multinomial model is proposed for estimating poverty and housing-unit characteristics of small areas. It is demonstrated that the model is in concordance with the design in that the model can reproduce within small area design-based estimates of variance. The methodology for producing estimates is presented, along with several evaluations using data from the American Com...

‎Small area estimates have received much attention from both private and public sectors due to the growing demand for effective planning of health services‎, ‎apportioning of government funds and policy and decision making‎. ‎Surveys are generally designed to give representative estimates at national or district level‎, ‎but estimates of variables of interest are oft...

Introduction: The "life cycle" theory is the most important tool for understanding the relationship among characteristics of housing and households, which reflects the behavior of households in the city. The theory, households are defined based on characteristics such as household size, number of students, employment status, income, age of household, etc. Every household, based on what are thei...
متن کاملSmall Area Variance Modeling with Application to County Poverty Estimates from the American Community Survey
Variances in the American Community Survey are estimated using a replicate weight methodology (Fay, 1995). In counties with small sample sizes, the variance estimates of poverty statistics show wide variation as a function of sample size. Generalized Variance Functions (GVF) can be used to smooth out the uncertainty of the design-based variance estimate. We propose incorporating GVFs with small...

Small area estimates provide a critical source of information used to study local populations. Statistical agencies regularly collect data from small areas but are prevented from releasing detailed geographical identifiers in public-use data sets due to disclosure concerns. Alternative data dissemination methods used in practice include releasing summary/aggregate tables, suppressing detailed g...
